The Queen’s Green Canopy Platinum Jubilee

We are delighted to be part of the national celebrations of the upcoming Platinum Jubilee by joining in planting for the Queen’s Green canopy in 2022. We have bought three beautiful multi stemmed Himalayan Birch (Jacquemontii) trees which we are putting in the corner of the Playing Fields. We felt this occasion should be be marked by something ornamental whilst also reflecting the commemoration of a Platinum Jubilee and these white stemmed trees will do that. We have a number of mature and semi mature trees, particularly Oak, already planted around our relatively limited space at the Playing Fields which require regular maintenance and monitoring, given the usage of the area, and we hope the new trees will prove to be lower maintenance but still provide a good habitat for a range of creatures whilst creating visual impact.

Our talented Handyman, Martin, has ensured they have been planted correctly and following advice from our suppliers, Fields of Sherburn, they are protected from any heavy frosts by a layer of straw.

Many thanks to Dave & Steve Stockdale at Wistow Road Farm for giving us the straw.

We hope they will flourish and be a stunning contribution to our lovely village in the years to come.

The Queen’s Green Canopy
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) will create a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and
whole woodlands in honour of The Queen’s service and the legacy she has built.
This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people,
wildlife and climate, now and for the future.
Any trees planted throughout 2022 can be part of the QGC.
